Main effort to push across the narrow neck to the western coast and to assault and capture Mt. Suribachi. II. MISSION: The 27th Marine Regiment lands on Red Beaches 1 & 2 to rapidly secure the beachhead, clear direct fire positions, and advance with maximum speed across the narrow volcanic neck to the western shore. The primary objective is to construct a multi-layered blocking position across the neck to isolate Mount Suribachi from the rest of the island, supporting the 28th Regiment's main assault. III. EXECUTION: A. Concept of the Operation: Phase 1 (Landing & Beachhead): The assault waves land on Red 1 and Red 2. The immediate task is to overcome enemy strongpoints on the beach and establish a continuous line. Phase 2 (Cross-Island Thrust): Upon securing the beachhead, Red 1, Red 2, and Red 3 will commence a rapid thrust directly across the narrow volcanic neck to the western coast. Phase 3 (Isolation): Secure the western coast and establish fortified blocking positions with support from Green 1 (MG) and Thunder 1 (Mortars) to seal the northern exit from Mount Suribachi. Phase 4 (Capture): Red 1, Red 2, and Red 3 will commence assault on Mt. Suribachi to caputre the mountain with cover from Green 1 and Thunder 1. B.
